WAD began work on a new project

WAD is a partner in the Study of the Holocaust and Helping the new generations to learn how to live together.

The objective of the present project is to initiate a debate within Bulgarian society that would lead to further assessment of the Holocaust based on impartial reviewing of documents in Bulgaria and learning from Romania’s experience. In pursuance of this goal the project aims at:

  • Research: reviewing school curricula and filling in the educational gaps, or “white spots”; assessing historical facts (collection of documents in the state archives in Bulgaria and good practices from Romania) on the saving of the Jews; researching the electronic media and the press with respect to the issue, and more specifically – the language used and the presence of hate speech; lessons learnt – the Holocaust, the name change of Bulgarian Turks in the late 1980s, anti-gypsism; and

  • Remembrance: starting a series of public debates on the need of the introduction of Holocaust education as an example that would foster understanding and civic culture that would guard against any future perpetration of similar acts.

In brief, project activities include research of archives in Bulgaria and summary of Romania’s experience, and compilation of two reports; monitoring the media in Bulgaria and Romania for hate speech and drafting two reports; organizing two workshops in each country respectively; and, dissemination of the reports, project results, recommendations and good practices.

The target group includes history teachers, university lecturers, curricula developers, developers of teaching material and editors, representatives of educational departments and museums, civil society representatives, journalists, Roma representatives, minority women representatives, etc.

Women’s Alliance for Development (WAD), Bulgaria and Asociatia Divers (Diverse Association), Romania are partners with Reason Institute under the project

The period for the implementation of the project is 1 December 2010 – 30 November 2011.

This initiative is funded by the Education, Audiovisual and Culture Executive Agency (EACEA) – Europe for Citizens Programme (Activity 4).
